Inspired by the simple dignity and community fabric of Canterbury, Hancock, and other Shaker villages, this project creates a neighborhood of articulate, well-crafted public spaces and homes. Two historic barns are renovated for community functions. Active lifestyles are supported by the adjacent full-service senior healthcare facility. Universal design features create safe single-floor living environments by addressing such issues as mobility, visual acuity, and dexterity. Features like on-grade access, wide doorways, lever door-handles, curbless showers, and flush threshholds allow residents to age-in-place.
Heating and cooling loads in the Energy Start certified homes are dramatically reduced by the highly efficient building envelopes, which allow small HVAC components to be effective. Equipment is rated at an extraordinary 95% efficiency.
