Swan Boat Pavilion
Boston, MA

Designed to replace an uninspired utilitarian shed, this building choreographs functional requirements with a composition that animates users’ long wait for the boat ride with framed views to the pond, the park, and the city beyond. Ticket sales and stroller storage are shaded beneath the circular hub’s vegetated roof. Daylight-diffusing tensile roofs shelter queueing for the boats, and contrast the skeletal structure (tethered to the shoreline) with a lighter element gesturing to evoke whimsy and flight.
